Shelling
Best shelling
The hour after low tide, ideally the morning after a blow. Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout are the jackpot; on the island, walk east toward the Fort Macon jetty where the current stacks the tideline.
Sunrise
Sunrise spots
Under Oceanana Pier in Atlantic Beach is the photograph. For a quieter version, the Coral Shores dune crossover in Pine Knoll Shores puts you on empty sand with coffee in hand.

Sunset belongs to the sound side. The Atlantic Beach causeway, the 34° North deck and any sound-side dock all deliver; Taylor's Creek in Beaufort is the one worth driving for.
Dolphins
Dolphin viewing
Most mornings before 9am, working the bar just past the break. Bogue Sound channel edges are the other reliable spot — go out on a paddleboard at first light and stay still.

Fishing tips
Fish the first hour of light and the last. Chasin' Tails Outdoors will tell you honestly what is running and rig you for it. Piers cover the licence; surf and boat anglers need their own.

Grab a cup on the Atlantic Beach causeway before the 8:30am breakfast rush, or make Beaufort's Front Street the morning stop when you head over for a day trip.

Three-day weekend
- Day 1 — Arrive, groceries, pool, and shrimp burgers from Big Oak Drive-In on the balcony.
- Day 2 — Beach until lunch, Fort Macon casemates and jetty in the afternoon, mini golf at Lost Treasure Golf after dinner, crabbing with flashlights after dark.
- Day 3 — Sunrise under Oceanana Pier, breakfast at 4 Corners Diner, one last swim, drive home.
Week-long family trip
- Sun — Arrive, unpack, cook in, sunset on the sound side.
- Mon — Full beach day, pool in the afternoon, Roma Pizza.
- Tue — NC Aquarium at opening, Theodore Roosevelt trail, quiet beach afternoon.
- Wed — Beaufort Paddle kayak trip out to the shoals at low tide to hunt sand dollars, then Banks Grille for loaded grits.
- Thu — Beaufort: Front Street, Maritime Museum, wild horse tour, Moonrakers for dinner.
- Fri — Cape Lookout ferry, lighthouse, shelling; the evening sail with Lookout Cruises to finish the day.
- Sat — Fort Macon in the morning, last swim, a treat from Friendly Market in Morehead City for the road.
Couples long weekend
- Sunrise walk and coffee on the balcony, no schedule until lunch.
- Afternoon paddle on the sound, then a Rhumbar cocktail before dinner.
- Evening sail with Lookout Cruises, then dinner at 34° North as the sun goes down.

Angler's three days
- Chasin' Tails Outdoors for licence, bait and the real report.
- First light on Oceanana Pier; mid-morning at the Fort Macon jetty.
- A half-day inshore charter for flounder and drum out of Atlantic Beach.
- Cape Lookout point if the weather and the barge schedule cooperate.
Family day, done right
- 7am — sunrise and shells before anyone else is up.
- 9am — beach with the pop-up shade, water by 10.
- 1pm — lunch and pool through the hottest hours.
- 5:15pm — early dinner, no wait. 8pm — crabbing with a flashlight.
Timing
The rhythm of a good beach day
- Before 9am belongs to sunrise, shells and dolphins.
- 10am–1pm is beach time; the water is at its best and the sun is manageable.
- 1–4pm is pool, nap and aquarium weather.
- 5:15pm is dinner if you would rather not queue.
- After dark is crabbing, cards and the balcony.
